Although using vaginal washes to keep the genitals clean is a debated topic, choosing the right one and using it the right way is the key. It is important to keep your vagina clean as improper cleaning might increase your risk of fungal infections, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) and vaginal dryness, in extreme cases. That being said, using a vaginal wash to keep the vagina clean should be done with caution. To help you out, here are some tips from our expert Dr Rohit Batra, Dermatologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, you should keep in the mind if you are planning to invest in one.
1. Stay away from scented ones: It is common belief that fragrant vaginal washes keep you clean and 'fresh' down there. However, the scented vaginal washes contain harmful chemicals, that give it the pleasant smell. These chemicals might lead to skin irritation and allergy around genitals. If you still want to invest in a fragrant vaginal wash, choose a one that has a very mild fragrance. Not just this, here are eight things you should NEVER do to your vagina!
2. Check for lactic acid: Always wondered why did Cleopatra bathed in sour milk? Well, the reason could be because of the lactic acid content in sour milk. Yes, lactic acid is known to possess excellent cleaning properties which help in maintaining the vagina's pH balance. And this not only maintains the acidic environment around the vagina but also prevents the growth of bacteria, thereby keeping infection at bay.
3. Opt for the one with glycerin: A known humectant, a compound which attracts moisture to the skin, thereby maintaining moisture and hydrate the vagina. So if you are dealing with vaginal dryness or have a dry skin around genitals, using a vaginal wash that contains glycerine might help.
4. Look for sodium lauryl sulphate: A common ingredient found in shampoos and soaps, sodium lauryl sulphate forms micelles, small compounds that clean the bacteria and dirt present around the vagina and hence, helps keep the vagina healthy and clean. It also aids in preventing bacterial infection. However, ensure that the product contains sodium lauryl sulphate in minute quantities as an excess of the same might lead to itching and skin rash.
5. Make sure it contains caprylic/capric glycerides: The main function of these compounds is to hydrate the skin and replenish the skin of the lost moisture. Unlike glycerine, which is hygroscopic, a compound which attracts moistures from the skin, these compounds do not draw moisture from the skin. Hence, it is always advised to choose a vaginal wash that contains both glycerin and caprylic/capric glycerides for an effective result. There are varying opinions about cleaning your vagina with a vaginal wash, but you have to agree that staying clean down there is essential.
